Brief History “Pilot Grove became a town in 1873 soon after the arrival arrival of the MKT Railroad. Samuel Roe, a teacher and postmaster, was the founder of Pilot Grove. He Helped with the building of the railroad depot. Travelers going from Boonville to Independence watched for a grove of trees which was easy to see for miles around. There were very few trees at that time except for low brush so that this grove of trees standing high above all the rest was a landmark and a pilot to the travelers going across the wide prairie. This is the reason for the name, Pilot Grove. ”—Ann Beckner Betteridge. Discover Cooper County by looking back. Interstate Studio Sedalia, MO. 1995. Chapter 10. |
